Book Review of : Counterintelligence
Michele Packard's newest, intense thriller, Counterintelligence, forces Matti Baker and her team to battle forces of evil never before confronted in history. After being declared dead while in hiding and undercover, Matti is challenged to discover and explain how a worldwide virus is being used by evil intelligence services, foreign countries, and even clandestine US public services to control the population and the environment. It is a deadly conspiracy, a scheme carefully designed to take advantage of governments, especially the American government that is dangerously out of touch and out of power in the places where it counts the most. Would governments use diseases to cull out the old and unhealthy from the general population?
The author's development of Matti's unique physiological and mental characteristics and her physical attributes give the reader a believable wonder-woman, quite unlike other female heroines. The minor characters have distinct personalities, express humor, and exhibit human emotions that balance Matti's uniqueness. She is a heroine all readers, especially girls, will want to emulate. She's also happily married to an understanding husband and is a mother.
The author quickly involves the reader by revealing just enough plot facts to allow the reader's imagination to start attempting to figure out the direction of Packard's thriller. Her use of popular culture, songs, and movies add authenticity and richness to the novel's world. Her vast knowledge of current events helps ground the reader in time and place. Her references to the power and misuse of social media and her knowledge of high technological weapons and cars create many an "ah ha" moment, making the reader do a quick "google" search.
Pegasus spyware, "the next generation of warfare and cyber security," is used to track down some of the perceived villains. Matti explains to her team that there are individuals and agencies in collaboration by Sinicization. A term that sent this reviewer to Google. The term has been recently applied to the Chinese actively modifying non-Chinese societies by putting them under Chinese influence. By releasing the Covid virus, did the Chinese plan to take over the global economy? Something to ponder?
Matti introduces a conundrum as she boards a plane. What is the difference between profiling and stereotyping? With all passengers and airline personnel required to wear masks, a suspect fellow passenger attracted her attention. This subplot is one that will keep the reader up late. Could a possible hijacking be a random act of terrorism?
The more the reader delves into this fascinating read, he will wonder if fiction is becoming factual. Or is Packard such an astute intellectual and researcher that she is able to expose reality through the use of fiction? With several intense thrillers to her credit, this award-winning author of action-packed contemporary fiction is a name to watch.
