Book Review of : Departure
Departure" by Tippi Bruce is a gripping novel that delves into the harrowing tale of America's downfall, orchestrated by a nefarious organization known as the Guidestone. The aftermath of this treacherous coup brings forth a new era for the nation, as a select few are safeguarded to become the vanguard of a reemerging society – the esteemed "founders" of this transformed country. The novel narrates the life of survivors as they navigate the complexities of their new reality and pave the way for a hopeful future.
Thousands lie dead after simultaneous strikes across the country. In the midst of the initial wave of violence and disturbing kidnapping of families to populate a new nation, a woman named Joy finds herself desperate to escape to Canada for her safety. Amidst the chaos, a terrified person hands her a baby during a sweep by the Guidestone's militia. Suddenly, Joy is not only responsible for herself but also for the baby. Believing that this group may spare certain families, she sets out to find a man willing to pose as her husband. She stumbles upon Charlie, who is injured and unconscious, but she hopes he can play the role of her fake husband and supposed father to the baby now in her care.
Joy and her adopted family are forcibly boarded onto a train that will transport them to their new home, known as Haven. This place will not only be their residence but also a center for indoctrination for the inhabitants. Within this group of survivors, some of them are determined to escape the oppression and madness of this new world order. Together, they unite to strategize how to flip the tables on the organization that holds them as virtual hostages.
Life at Haven is reminiscent of the religious cult in Jonestown, complete with community gardens, a large dining hall, and various facilities that cater to the captive group. The survivors quickly familiarize themselves with the group's hierarchy, including Dante, a man who faked his death and now holds power in the Guidestone organization; McTeague, the Director of Operations at Haven; and Hale, a versatile official who is responsible for welcoming new residents upon their arrival.
As the survivors grasp the brutality of the revolution's beginnings and the dystopian reality that resulted - feelings of depression and resistance take hold. Joy and her courageous allies emerge as a formidable force against the Guidestone group.
Bruce's "Departure" combines the realms of reality and fantasy, offering a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of human society. With its blend of optimism and insight, this book takes readers on an exhilarating journey that is as introspective as it is thrilling.
