The cover art of "The Centered Heart" will cause a curious reader to stop and pick up this self-help book. Sub-titled "Evidence-Based, Mind-Body Practices to Stress Less and Improve Cardiac Health" by yoga therapist Susi Amendola, this nonfiction is the results of the author's extensive training and studies of yoga and healthy practices.  

Since stress is often a precursor to more serious illness, including cardiovascular problems, the methods for managing stress presented here are excellent regardless of the reader's lifestyle, physical fitness, or scheduling.   

Author, Amendola provides practices and the therapeutic reasoning behind the recommended activities from a medical as well as a yoga perspective. She relates how gentle daily mindful movements, such as breathing, relaxation, and meditation, can make the person feel better, physically and mentally. The practice of imagery and a connection to nature will shift awareness from external, such as pain and suffering, to inner wisdom and self-control.  

The author's history of depression led her to study yoga and meditation. She shares her experiences without pushing her personal beliefs.  As an adult, she joined doctors in a study on Healthy lifestyle practices to fight disease with lifestyle changes. Relating to her studies, she presents the positive results of relaxation and meditation as well as food choices to heart health.  

The yoga postures are presented in an easily followed format with alternatives for persons of different needs. Photographs enable the beginner to relate to the directions. With compassion and warmth, the author presents practices to support cardiac as well as spiritual health.  

Wisdom and insights presented with clearly written yoga techniques will help readers to be able to make changes in the quality of their lives by reacting to stress in positive ways. The structure of the book's format encourages the readers to choose which practices would be most beneficial and how to schedule time for incorporating those practices into a busy day. Highly recommended by physicians and yoga authorities, the text includes extensive notes, a bibliography, and an index for readers who wish to further research yoga's history and practices.
