“Because of His Heart,” by Stephen A. Marvin, is a work of literary fiction written in the tone and style of a Shakespearean drama. The author himself describes this psychological thriller as his “magnum opus,” a deeply layered narrative with a central focus on a troubled marriage. The story intricately weaves in several converging subplots and features flawed yet compelling characters whose struggles feel authentic and relatable.

At the heart of the narrative is Dr. Erica Seames, a woman grappling with intense emotional vulnerability following her second miscarriage, a loss that leaves her searching for solace and understanding. Her husband, Charles Portland, wrestles with his own inner turmoil, suppressing jealousy and suspicion over what he perceives as a potential flirtation on Erica’s part. Adding to the complexity of their relationship, Erica turns to a personal blog to express her emotional pain—a decision that not only serves as a therapeutic outlet but becomes a pivotal element in the unfolding story.

Charles suggests that Erica seek help from a psychiatrist named Nathan Milo, hoping professional support might aid her struggles. During her therapy sessions, Erica opens up about her dark and troubled fantasies, gradually becoming convinced that Charles has abused her. However, Dr. Milo has his own hidden agenda. Using Erica’s vulnerability to his advantage, he manipulates her, further exploiting her emotional turmoil. Fueled by his access to her private thoughts, including those shared on her blog, Dr. Milo carefully sets Erica up to serve his own nefarious purposes. His calculated manipulations, combined with Erica’s emotional pain and confusion, drive her to a breaking point where suicide appears very inviting.

At the pinnacle of her emotional meltdown, Erica is desperate for help to quell the beckoning call of death. She finds a lifeline in a friend whose support begins to act as a catalyst for change. As her mind slowly starts to bring forward suppressed memories, a new and terrifying possibility emerges. She starts to consider whether it was Dr. Milo who insidiously introduced all these negative feelings into her mind. The alternative is almost as frightening: or is she just so mentally unstable that any suggestion, no matter how destructive, will take root and become her new excuse for her profound unhappiness? Ultimately, the conclusion leaves readers with a sense of hope for the characters and confidence in their future.
