“Servant: The Goodpasture Chronicles” is the second installment in the fantasy, time travel, and epic adventure series crafted by the husband-and-wife writing duo known as R. J. Halbert. This title serves as a sequel to the first book, continuing the narrative with fresh twists, yet it is designed to be appreciated as a stand-alone work. The backstory from the first book is seamlessly woven into the new plot, allowing new readers to effortlessly immerse themselves in the story without needing prior context. Additionally, the characters are explored in greater depth, providing a richer understanding of their motivations, relationships, and evolution as the adventure unfolds.

The Keane family seems like an ordinary, modern family adjusting to life in their new home—an old, atmospheric New England house. But their fresh start takes a strange turn when they realize the house may not just be haunted in the usual sense, but influenced by eerie supernatural occurrences. Teenaged son Zack begins noticing odd phenomena, from faint, disembodied voices to fleeting, inexplicable mirages. Driven by curiosity and suspicion, he sets out to investigate, only to mysteriously disappear. His sudden absence throws the family into disarray, sparking a desperate search to uncover what happened to him.

Meanwhile, Zack finds himself transported through time into a bizarre, alternate dimension where he meets Akolo, a mysterious inhabitant of this strange realm. Together, they embark on nonsensical and primitive adventures that unfold in parallel to the chaos back home. As Zack navigates this surreal new world, his parents and sister, Ariel, grapple with a frantic search that pulls them deeper into the unknown, involving ancient cultures, cryptic curses, and unsettling ceremonies. The family must confront both the mysteries of the house and their own fears as they fight to uncover the truth and bring Zack back.

Zack’s parents react to his sudden disappearance with a mixture of despair and an unnerving series of supernatural discoveries. As they search for their son, they find that their own home is not what it seems. A caretaker on the property appears to know much more about the home’s dark history and the forces at play but is deeply reluctant to become involved, adding to the family's frustration and fear. This erosion of logic and trust challenges the family members, pushing them to their limits. While they eventually achieve a final triumph over the secrets that have haunted them, the resolution asks the profound question: “What is the purpose of all this chaos?” In the end, Zack is left to share his unbelievable story while the family attempts to piece together their lives and return to what was once normal. However, the conclusion intentionally leaves the reader wanting more, hinting that the strange events are far from over.

In addition to the suspense generated by its inventive and imaginative approach to the concept of time travel, this story challenges its readers to contemplate the very nature of lies. It delves into the nuance of deceit, prompting reflection on whether a lie can also encompass a truth that is simply incomplete—a partial truth presented as the whole story. This compelling tale expertly weaves together complex themes such as the ouroboros, representing cyclical patterns and eternal return, alongside considerations of legacy and ancient religious traditions. It stands as an excellent fantasy for the young adult audience and also serves as engaging, light reading for adults. Ultimately, this book will leave readers eagerly anticipating the release of book three in "The Goodpasture Chronicles" series.
