Dancing with the Clouds - A True Story of Post-Traumatic Growth by Olive Mazerolle is a compelling memoir that takes readers on a journey through her struggle and ultimate triumph over PTSD. Olive, as a young child, faced the devastating loss of two significant loved ones in her life. The emotional turmoil that ensued was profound and deeply unsettling for her. The accident that claimed their lives was a bitter pill for Olive to swallow, leaving her grappling with an overwhelming sense of loss and confusion. A short time later, the boyfriend of one of these loved ones also passed away, further compounding Olive's grief and adding to her emotional burden. It was an immense challenge for Olive to process and accept the magnitude of these losses at such a young age. In response, she found herself on a journey to heal her wounded inner child, work through the trauma of these tragic events, and cultivate a sense of self-worth and esteem. Mazerolle shares her experiences and insights throughout her memoir, offering hope and inspiration to others who have faced similar challenges. Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the potential for growth and healing in the face of adversity. A major issue that she had to endure as she became an adult was being pawed over by her superiors at her workplace. It was a distressing and humiliating experience that started when the man who hired her unabashedly admitted that he chose her for the job because the white blouse she wore at the interview clearly outlined her nipples. This was not just a one-time incident; the harassment continued in various forms. For instance, at work, her boss found it necessary to caress her breasts during their first meeting, leaving her feeling violated and powerless. Such incidents became frequent, trapping her in a cycle of helplessness and fear. To find solace and purpose, she began donating her time to help a dying individual she had grown close to. This volunteer work gave her some sense of fulfillment and escape from her own troubles as she focused on comforting someone in their final days. However, when this individual eventually passed away, she was left devastated, and her depression deepened. The loss compounded her feelings of helplessness, leaving her grappling with a mix of grief and unresolved trauma from her workplace experiences. Olive's life was reminiscent of Forest Gump's mother's saying, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." She acknowledged that she had personal challenges and took the courageous step of seeking professional help to address them. Despite her efforts, life still had more challenging times in store. Olive faced the harrowing battle of being a breast cancer victim, enduring the cancer scare not just once but multiple times, which tested her resilience and strength. However, amidst the struggles, some good things unfolded. Olive finally found a partner she could genuinely love and who would love her in return, bringing a newfound sense of joy and companionship into her life. With this relationship, things improved significantly, offering her a sense of stability and happiness she longed for. Yet, life continued to present more lessons, reminding her that growth and learning are lifelong journeys. Through it all, Olive navigated the complexities of her existence with grace and fortitude, ever optimistic for the future. Through her experiences, Olive came to realize the importance of self-care and prioritizing mental health. She learned that it was crucial to address any underlying issues and seek support when needed. By doing so, she was able to bounce back from setbacks and continue moving forward. Olive's story also highlights the impact of volunteer work on both the giver and the receiver. While it provided her with a sense of purpose and fulfillment, she also touched many lives through her acts of kindness. Her compassion and empathy for others shone bright, even during her own struggles. Moreover, Olive's journey reminds us that life is unpredictable and filled with ups and downs. It's essential to savor the good moments when we can. Reviewed by: James B. |
Olive Mazerolle grew up on the most easterly point of New Brunswick in a small fishing village called Baie Sainte-Anne. Her life journey eventually brought her to live and work in Fredericton (1981 to 2004) and then transferred to Moncton where she retired (2016). Retirement allowed her to grow her passion for writing. She uses this new skill to share how one can grow beyond past traumatic experiences. Her only hope for this, her first book, is that it can help others. Her life continues to be good as she remains healthy and, as they are now both retired, enjoys travelling with her husband Larry. She received the 125th Canadian Confederation Medal in 1993 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.
