“Loki’s Daughter” is a captivating and creative interpretation of ancient Norse legends and myths surrounding the enigmatic demigod Loki, blending them seamlessly with an inventive narrative set against the backdrop of World War II. This novel, written by Linda O'Dette Warner Catalan, intricately weaves together mythological elements and a fictional plot rooted in historical events. The story explores Loki’s potential involvement in pivotal moments of history, offering readers a fascinating reimagining of both myth and reality. The intriguing cover art not only hints at the historical time period but also provides subtle introductions to the novel’s central characters, drawing readers into a world that is as mysterious as it is compelling. This is a must-read for fans of mythology, historical fiction, and imaginative storytelling.

Enhanced with glossaries of Norwegian terms, descriptions of the many gods, and hand drawn maps this tome will have the reader question his understanding of Norway’s resistance fighters to sabotage the German’s attempt to build an atomic bomb in Norway.  The first chapter introduces Elisa and Anna, two entertainment workers in a German Officers Club. The two women become involved in espionage as Elisa joins forces with compatriots to spy on the enemy who has taken over their homeland. Meanwhile, a parallel story involves British soldiers who are assigned to destroy a power plant. The German occupation of Norway is a historical event that has been explored a little. The author has done commendable research in her retelling.

While the present-day stories are being told, the author weaves in fascinating backstories of Loki’s imaginative involvement in historical events, blending myth and history in an engaging way. Loki, widely known as the god of mischief, is a complex character whose life is filled with deception, cunning, and subterfuge. His clever and often manipulative actions play a significant role in shaping the lives of other gods, adding depth and intrigue to the narrative.

In these tales, Loki is portrayed as a friend of Pan, the mischievous satire god, a rival of Thor, the mighty god of thunder, and an adversary of Zeus, the powerful emperor of Olympus. These relationships highlight his ability to adapt to any situation, whether through charm, trickery, or outright rivalry. Loki’s adventures are not only rich in mythology but also strike a chord with modern readers, drawing comparisons to the iconic Marvel Comics and the blockbuster movies that brought Loki’s adventures to life on the big screen. These depictions serve as a testament to his enduring appeal as a character who is as unpredictable as he is captivating.

In this book, Loki is a shapeshifter who spies on Earth creatures through a Verdens Window, a magic machine that can focus on anything or person on Earth and can facilitate a god to transport to that destination in any physical form. Loki transports to Earth as a cat.  He becomes involved with the two women in Norway and in the possible distraction of the atomic bomb.

If the action and complicated characters aren’t enough to capture the reader, then the inclusion of elves, dwarfs, giants, and Valkyries, as well as references to Odin, Osiris, Tyr, demons, and dragons, should keep the reader up all night. “Loki’s. Daughter” is the first in a proposed series based on Loki.
