Book Review of : A Moment's Surrender
A Moment’s Surrender by John Burt is a stunning work of realistic fiction that delves into the wreckage of what it means to have “loved and been loved, and made a mess of it”. It is a rigorous, psychologically complex debut that explores the high cost of human connections and the surprising grace that can unfold in the face of death.
Set against the stark, vividly rendered landscapes of Reno, Nevada, and Riverside, California, the story follows Paul Bishop, a stalled freshman writing instructor whose life is jolted by the senseless murder of his former best friend, the famed poet Tom Corbin. Bound by guilt and a devastating secret, Paul takes it upon himself to care for Tom’s terminally ill widow, Susan. However, Paul is trapped in a painful triangle of loyalty and betrayal: he knows that, just before his death, Tom had planned to leave Susan for Rachel Lake—the very woman who had been Paul’s long-ago lover. Paul must navigate a "tangled web" of grief and deception that threatens to undo them all.
Burt’s writing style is "splendidly written" and "shimmers with intelligence," offering astute insights into human existence. The novel provides a "witty, entertaining portrait of literary academia" while simultaneously plunging into the "messy intense nature of love" and "fractured friendship". The pacing allows the history of these four individuals to slowly unravel, building suspense as Paul is forced into action to wrangle his feelings for two very different women. Character development is a highlight; Paul is a "hesitant" but deeply felt protagonist, and Susan is a poignant figure—an oncologist who comforts the dying while facing her own mortality.
What makes this novel truly riveting is its "deep compassion" for the complexities of love and its "gorgeous exploration of grief." One of the most haunting elements is how Burt captures the thematic core of the book: the "awful daring of a moment’s surrender." The way Paul navigates his loyalty to a dead friend who essentially "made his friend part" of his betrayal is masterfully handled. As American author Stephen McCauley notes, the book "casts a spell" as characters "lurch toward redemption."
A Moment’s Surrender is a "gift to its reader." It will appeal to those who enjoy deep, character-centric narratives that balance intellectual rigor with raw emotion. Readers of Marjan Kamali or Stephen McCauley will find a similar richness here. If you enjoy stories that examine "the many ways we all possess to destroy and save each other," you need to buy this book. It is an emotionally satisfying journey that remakes everyone in its "immediate orbit."

About John Burt
I have been a professor at Brandeis University for more than forty years. Although this is my first novel, I have published three volumes of poetry, The Way Down (Princeton UP, 1988), Work without Hope (Johns Hopkins UP, 1996), and Victory (Turning Point, 2007). My most recent scholarly book, Lincoln's Tragic Pragmatism (Harvard UP 2013), was reviewed on the front page of the New York Times Book Review when it appeared. I am also the literary executor of the novelist and poet Robert Penn Warren, and the editor of his Collected Poems.
