Javier De Lucia’s The Wake of Expectations is a gritty, nostalgic, and deeply honest coming-of-age journey that spans the transition from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. The narrative follows Calvin “Cal” McShane, whose life is irrevocably altered when his father, Jack, wins a $5 million lottery jackpot during Cal’s senior year of high school. What follows is not a simple fairytale of wealth, but a complex exploration of how sudden fortune can fuel an indefinite period of self-indulgence and fracture a family. Cal finds himself caught between his father’s rigid "back-up plan" for him—a business degree at the conservative University of Chapelle Dorée—and his own burning aspirations as a bassist and songwriter.

The novel excels in its portrayal of adolescent and early-adult relationships, rendered with a raw, often humorous authenticity that avoids common genre clichés. Cal’s circle—comprising the loyal Ben, the charismatic but reckless Jake, and the enigmatically guarded Dani—provides a vivid backdrop of "threesome nights," failed musical gigs, and awkward romantic encounters like the infamous "Atari date." De Lucia masterfully weaves music through every chapter of the plot, from the crude parody songs of "Vulgarity" to the professional setbacks and "demon semen" rumors surrounding local bands.

The story takes a dark turn as the lottery fortune evaporates, drained by Jack’s secretive and obsessive funding of "Solitaire," a talentless dancer he hopes to turn into a star. This betrayal leads Cal to the brink of violence, forcing him to confront the heavy burden of familial expectations and the painful "adult shock" of realizing that most people are not destined to be stars. Ultimately, the novel is a story of reconciliation and maturity, as Cal learns to navigate life’s "garbage" pitches to finally find his own "sweet spot."

The Wake of Expectations is an ideal read for Generation Xers seeking a trip down memory lane, music aficionados who appreciate the struggle of the "craftsman," and any reader who enjoys a realistic look at the complexities of father-son dynamics.

"A raw, rock-infused odyssey through the highs of a lottery win and the lows of a family’s ruin, De Lucia’s debut is a masterclass in the bittersweet reality of growing up when the music finally stops."
