Book Review of :  A Pleasant Fiction: A Novelistic Memoir

“A Pleasant Fiction” is a fictionalized memoir by author Javier de Lucia, who courageously tackles profound themes of death, loss, and survival, approaching these heavy topics with a refreshing blend of empathy and humor. The book's mature themes and use of adult language are likely to resonate deeply with readers who see their own life experiences mirrored in the author’s journey. Throughout the narrative, the story includes brief, passing references to the author writing another book, titled “A Wake of Expectations.” While this other work serves as a prequel, it is not a necessary prerequisite to fully appreciate the emotional impact and narrative power of “A Pleasant Fiction.”

The novel's narrator, Calvin, opens his memoir with graphic metaphors that illustrate the physical decay of his deceased parents' home, which is filled with the decaying evidence of their hoarding. Already overwhelmed by the recent deaths of his parents, uncles, and special needs brother, Cal must now confront his emotional and physical exhaustion to clean out the house in time for its sale. As he struggles to remove eighty years of overwhelming junk, each item triggers personal memories, causing his mind—and the memoir itself—to flash back to various moments. He relates these fragmented memories, touching upon themes of life and death, family dynamics and financial struggles, and the contrast between his old school friends and more recent Facebook connections.

Cal relates the considerable burden of caring for his ailing parents and the emotional trauma of being solely responsible for his medically challenged adult brother. Cal’s quiet determination to accept his role, despite his own profound exhaustion, is a source of empowerment for readers who may recognize their own struggles in his story. Overwhelmed by the catastrophic losses Cal endures and moved by his courageous responses to each sensitive issue, the reader is ultimately encouraged to confront and deal with their own personal challenges with renewed strength.

Cal’s response offers a sense of acceptable closure for readers, embodying a profound message: Let it go. Forgive what cannot be changed. Most importantly, forgive yourself—you did the best you could under the circumstances. Through his own journey, Cal reminds readers that the process of growing older is certainly not for sissies. Read “The Wake of Expectations” to uncover the full story of how Cal’s younger life influenced this heart-tugging, gutsy memoir and discover the hard-won wisdom he shares.
