Terror in Boring Town (A Sam and Rex Adventure Book 1) by Hoot N, Holler is the first book of a series featuring the adventures of two sleuthing young boys named Sam and Rex, The first book of the series is a quirky 230 page novel about a very memorable summer when Sam and Rex discover something extraordinary going on in their quiet little town of Boring, Maryland. The fictional action in the story takes place in the real town of Boring, Maryland.  The story offers up refreshingly irreverent messaging about boyhood and also has great relatability for young readers.

What did Sam and Rex see, and why are they so sure that these new individuals in their little town are up to no good? They have the curiosity of youth where they find it easier to spot things that are a bit different from the norm. The book also serves up quite a bit of humor into the story. It reiterates the fact that growing up often means having boundless curiosity, challenging authority, and wrestling with questions of good versus evil.

Sam and Rex’s observation of these questionable new individuals in their town has cringe-worthy moments as they try to expose the danger instore for their community. They will encounter several dangerous moments in their quest to prevent the calamity they fear is in store for the town of Boring.

The author has fun with names of characters in her novel, for example naming the clumsy letter carrier Daisy Whoopsy and the man behind the counter as Le Gross.

These young detectives with their dog Nero will be a fun read for a younger age group as they solve mysteries in Boring, Maryland. The novel shows great promise for the future books of the series.  I hope this series will inspire its preadolescent readers in the same way the Hardy Boy books did for me in my beginning of a lifelong love of literature.
