![]() Tiger Season will grip the reader by the throat right from the initial pages. Gojan Nikolich, a decorated Army Sergeant and a former journalist in Korea and Japan, wrote it. This historical novel is evidence of the author’s understanding of the Korean culture and knowledge of the post-Korean War during the 1960s Vietnam conflict. The reader is introduced to Edward Profar, a Korean vet, as he is struggling with medical apparatus and memories on his deathbed. His drug-induced dreams and hallucinations take the reader back to events of his youth that led up to his tour of duty on the Korean DMZ. On duty with his infantry sidekick, Lee, he discovers a dangerous secret that has military consequences. Eddie falls in love with a “licensed” entertainment and hospitality employee. Their relationship is platonic, but the vivid visuals of her lifestyle will cause the squeamish reader to gasp. Jia interjects her tragic backstory into Eddie’s life and A mysterious encounter with the bloody, mutilated carcasses of North Korean soldiers and the evidence that a 500-pound, man-eating Siberian tiger was stalking the DMZ set Eddie and Lee on a non-military course. To complicate Eddie’s tour of duty, Eddie and Lee become entangled with the government-sanctioned madame, her business bosses, and beautiful Jia’s dilemma. The US government’s involvement will shock the average reader. Eddie’s fate is unexpected. The conclusion wraps up the entwined life stories of Eddie, Lee, and Jai but leaves the reader anxious for fate and love to prevail. Reality is true to life, as is the plot, and are the unforgettable characters. Tiger Season is the author’s third psychological military novel with settings in the fragile and controversial aftermath of the Korean War. His knowledge of the Korean culture, customs, and tiger legends enrich the story, as does his personal experience as a soldier, make the military scenes and the personality of fictional soldiers believable.
