Book Review of :  Coming Home

coming-home.jpg Coming Home by Gloria Javillonar Palileo is the story of a young boy named Juan who through no fault of his has to live his life being excluded. Juan has lived his entire life in Alabama, but because of his distinctive looks has not been accepted as an American. Juan's mother is from the Philippines. Therein lies the problem-Juan looks Filipino and therefore children in his school treat him differently. Time and time again Juan tries to convince his classmates that he is just as American as they are, but to no avail. Juan finally decides that if he can't be accepted as an American he will be a Filipino. He starts to sun so that his lighter skin will darken and be more in line with his relatives darker skin. Juan and his mother take a trip to the Philippines. Juan is excited to be visiting "his people", but when he arrives he encounters exactly what he has dealt with in Alabama. No acceptance as one of his people. In Alabama he is considered foreign and in the Philippines he is considered American. Coming Home tackles a situation that is all too common for children of immigrant parents. Where do they belong and how do they belong? With a rapidly growing society where this is the case for many children, we must be mindful and proactive in accepting these children as ours-Americans.

About Gloria Javillonar Palileo
