Author Brian D. McLean has invested more than 20 years as an environmentalist studying human nature and the interconnected causes of civilizations' collapse at the “height of their existence.”  His contemporary views expressed in “Our Global Crisis,” subtitled with the challenging statement, “We’ll Never Run Out,” present environmental issues from a world view.

Mclean’s overview presents the term Anthropocene era as the current geological era of species reshaping climate.  His exhaustive thesis involves this bigger picture.

McLean leads the reader to consider the fate of two societies decimated by human interaction. The first example re-examines how humankind squandered natural resources without considering the end results.  The now-extinct passenger
pigeon, once numbering between three and five billion birds, was reduced to zero by overhunting and loss of natural habitat.  This dramatic retelling of man’s lack of understanding of the stability and sustainability of nature's resources should preface discussions of conservation and restoration.

The author continues with the history of the Rapa Nui tribes that settled Easter Island in the Pacific.  A volcanic island with good soil and a warm climate, the land was forested with palms, other plants, and small animals.  Early Polynesian settlers brought food crops. The population grew with no regard for deforestation, which ultimately led to the decline and collapse of the society.  This is a prime example of how human actions can directly lead to the collapse of an entire
 civilization.

In addition to examining specific case studies, McLean also analyzes larger societal and cultural factors that contribute to environmental degradation. McLean addresses the interconnectedness of nations in today's globalized world and how their actions affect not only their own environment but also that of others. The consequences of climate change and pollution are felt by all countries, regardless of their level of industrialization or economic status.

The author uses these examples of man’s failures due to internal mismanagement that led from an advanced society to conflict and slow demise. So, what is the future of today’s world society? Like past seemingly successful societies, the world today must examine the loss of resources, correct overuse, and environmental challenges.

After a discussion on the Covid 19 impact on today's world and what we have learned from it, the author’s solution seems simple.  It starts with individuals differentiating between needs and wants.  This author’s expertise is thoroughly referenced with a glossary and extensive bibliography.  This text is a valuable tool for determining solutions critical for survival.
