"The Dream" by Roxanne E. Burkey and Charles V. Breakfield captivates readers instantly with its stunning full-color cover. The enchanting artwork features a fairy-tale castle, its gleaming spires and intricate architecture rising majestically above a misty, cloud-filled valley bathed in soft hues of gold and blue. This magical scene invites readers to step into a world of fantasy and wonder, setting the perfect tone for the imaginative and thrilling adventure that awaits within its pages. Every detail of the cover promises a story filled with mystery, excitement, and a touch of enchantment.

Siblings, Destiny and Valerian, are introduced to the reader in the opening sentence as they leave their familiar home and step into an enchanted forest teeming with mystery and magic. The reader is immediately drawn into their world, curious to follow their adventures and uncover the secrets of this otherworldly place. The two children, ages nine and twelve, are relatable and vividly described, with detailed physical characteristics and simple clothing that makes them seem like any ordinary kids. However, it doesn’t take long for the reader to discover that Destiny isn’t quite ordinary—she has a remarkable ability to dream of the future. To her, these dreams are more like visions, glimpses of events that will eventually come to pass. Valerian, her older brother, not only believes in the power of her dreams but also takes it upon himself to protect her, knowing the weight and danger of such a gift. Together, they navigate the enchanted landscape, their bond deepening as they encounter challenges and uncover truths that test their courage and trust in one another. The enchanted forest becomes a character in its own right, filled with strange creatures, hidden paths, and clues that tie into Destiny’s visions, creating a captivating journey for both the siblings and the reader.

The children’s journey into the forest is filled with challenges and unexpected encounters. They face a wounded, warthog-like monster that tests their compassion, brought vividly to life through stunning, full-color illustrations that spark the reader’s imagination. Along the way, they meet Bran—an enigmatic bird who may be a raven or a crow, depending on whom you ask—and a massive spiked dragon-like creature with a surprisingly gentle heart. Morality tales are intricately woven into their adventure, enriching the narrative with deeper meaning. The group also encounters a mysterious, shimmering creature on a mission to find the dreamer. As Destiny and Valerian grapple with the strange and unsettling visions of a dream-like future, their contrasting reactions challenge readers to question their own assumptions and preconceived ideas.

The novel’s unexpected yet deeply satisfying conclusion invites readers to reflect on the nature of dreams. Do you believe in dreams? Should they be pursued? This thought-provoking story is an excellent choice for sparking meaningful discussions in a language arts or English class, with the teacher guiding as a moderator.

To enhance the reading experience, the book includes engaging black-and-white coloring sheets along with interactive activities such as a word search, matching challenge, knowledge check, and word scramble. These additions make it perfect for individual enjoyment or collaborative classroom use.
