Multi-talented author and actress Ann Greyson has created a Wild West thriller, Cowgirls and Indians, inspired by her acting gig in an almond milk commercial of the same name. Greyson is an award-winning author of both science fiction and horror novels. Her knowledge of the history of Tombstone, Arizona, in the mid-1880s, is exceptional, as revealed by her in-depth characterizations and Google-maps-worthy scenes.

Tombstone was the location of one of the most notorious gunfights in American West history. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday fought the Cowboys, a gang of gunslingers and gamblers who were also cattle rustlers. At this time, the famous Apache warrior Geronimo was terrorizing and killing homesteaders, stealing cattle, and burning ranches.

Native Americans were frequently mistreated and disrespected by silver miners, settlers, and the army, including when they visited the town.  One of these Native Americans is Sequoia, a young Cherokee woman who is mourning the loss of her fiancé, who was tragically murdered just before they were to wed. Alongside this, we are introduced to three girlfriends, each a daughter of a successful dairy farmer. These girls are full of personality, dressing extravagantly and flaunting their wealth at saloons and gambling establishments. The author highlights the stark contrast between the privileged lives of these girls in upper society and the impoverished living conditions of the despised and marginalized Native Americans.

Sequoia has planted almond trees on the tribe’s land and produces a small amount of almond milk that she tries to sell in town. Quickly, conflict developed between the dairy cowgirls and the Indians. Milk wars threaten the already volatile town. The sheriff’s office must contend with Sequoia becoming a famous outlaw, the army dealing with cattle rustlers and Apaches attacking homesteads, and the threat of Geronimo’s gang.  Add in a local gang of roughnecks wearing red bandanas calling themselves the Cowboys.

Violence is common, as are killings on the streets. Tombstone is the most exciting place to live in the West at this time. Historians will relish the tone of this book as it will help to depict visually what the untamed West was like. Readers of thrillers and suspense will read late at night to unravel the intertwined plots. As the conclusion nears, the reader will find out what happens to the famous female outlaw, the Indian tribe she belongs to, and to the Cowgirls who are milk barons. Enjoy this and Greyson’s other exciting books.
