Book Review of :  The King and I

The King and I, is written and illustrated by Sorel Kaire. It is a charming children’s story about a father’s growing love for his infant daughter. There should be nothing sweeter than welcoming a new baby into the world, but in some cultures, the fondness for sons is greater than that for daughters. Sorel Kaire’s book addresses that issue. The King and I, is written, with simple illustrations, to be read to young children. Some of the dialogue and drawings depict the confusing emotions the King felt when he first was aware he had a daughter instead of the son he desired. The book quickly illustrates his change of heart as his eyes met his daughter’s, and he felt a kinship and love for the infant girl.

He quickly learns to love and accept his infant daughter instead of the boy he had hoped for.  He also realizes that this little girl can be all the things he had been looking forward to. The King discovers how amazing someone so small can have such a huge impact on his life. He realizes she has made him a better king.

The short book gives the reader many opportunities and topics for discussion with a child. The topics of love and other emotions, as well as empowering girls, are important lessons. It is a great book to help quell those anxieties of disappointment by discovering how to process unmet expectations better.

There are lessons of a father’s love of a daughter. The King and I is a positive narrative that will be welcomed by parents of daughters. The delightful book will also help make little princesses feel welcomed to their family.

The book is printed as a paperback, and as a hardback, both versions would make a great addition to your child’s library.

The King and I’s real message is simply "Welcome to the world, little one! We love you."
