The author's personal experiences with sleep problems began in his youth when he snored so loudly that friends did not want him to spend the night.

The author is well acquainted with other sleep problems that readers assume are normal and seem to have no cure. He discusses tossing and turning while struggling to fall asleep and the exhausted feeling that affects mood and the ability to work productively.
