Max Sampson's timely book, Sick and Tired,  is aptly subtitled 10 Life-Changing Tactics for Combating Sleep Deprivation, Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, and Other Related Ailments. The author's personal experiences with sleep problems began in his youth when he snored so loudly that friends did not want him to spend the night.

The author is well acquainted with other sleep problems that readers assume are normal and seem to have no cure. He discusses tossing and turning while struggling to fall asleep and the exhausted feeling that affects mood and the ability to work productively. He acknowledges snoring, like other sleep annoyances that affect mood, general health, and even weight gain, can have physical causes. Sampson provides an in-depth examination of sleep disorders backed by credible references for further investigation. He also addresses the truth behind popular sleep misconceptions and the underlying causes for persistent fatigue, even following a short nap.

The author uses his own experiences to lead the reader to explore life-changing techniques that can help overcome sleep deprivation, the inability to fall asleep, and disorders such as sleep apnea and insomnia. He touches on excessive sleepiness and the pros and cons of afternoon naps. Narcolepsy and restless legs syndrome are also considered. This easy-to-follow guide will enable the reader to discover what his sleep problems are based on and whether self-care changes will provide relief. Exercise and diet are addressed as they contribute to a good night's sleep.  In some situations, over-the-counter medication is recommended.

If the reader takes sleep for granted, regardless of his ability to acquire the number of hours of quality sleep recommended by the physician but still feels exhausted in the morning, then he will learn the causes and effective solutions for improving his sleep. He will learn how to make his environment more conducive to sleep and relaxation techniques. By taking control of his needs, the reader will be healthier, refreshed, and more productive. Lifestyle changes and alternative treatments, medical devices, and technology are suggested.

How sleep disorders can affect a person's professional life is addressed. Sleep deprivation and traveling, called jet lag, can be better understood once the reader realizes the body's reaction to the sun, daylight, and darkness cycles.

If you want to gain a deeper understanding of your sleep issues, the author suggests keeping a sleep diary. His handy template will help you track your sleep patterns and identify areas for improvement to get better sleep!  The author includes extensive references for those seeking a more comprehensive understanding of their sleep problems.

By reading this book, you will gain insight into and overcome your sleep issues with a deep understanding of the factors impacting your sleep. Sampson's eye-opening exploration in his book “Sick and Tired” provides a comprehensive guide to customizing interventions based on your personal lifestyle. Discover the inner workings of sleep and its connection to daily activities, nutrition, and light to optimize your sleep quality. Read his book and start getting some refreshing sleep.
