Book Review of : The Council (Witch's Ambitions Trilogy)
The Council (Witch's Ambitions Trilogy) by Kayla Krantz is the first book of a trilogy that takes you deep into the fantastical imaginary world of the Land of Five, where we learn of a young woman who has powers that sets her apart from all those around her.
Lilith Lace is introduced as a young woman who is still in school learning of the powers enjoyed by the equipped and unequipped students. She is living in the land of Ignis and is the daughter of unequipped parents. She has accepted her station in life as an unequipped individual. Her parents are unequipped so naturally, so will she – that is just way genetics work. However, to her disbelief, she realizes late in her classes that she has developed certain magical powers for one - the ability of telekinesis. This particular power is usually associated with the equipped residents of Mentis, another realm of the Land of Five.
Krantz adds into her story a thread similar to Superman’s origin – she appears to be a mysterious child with powers taken in by an ordinary loving couple to raise and nurture. Howard and Regina are Lilith’s Jonathan and Martha Kent. They try to teach her all about right and wrong, and eventually, like most parents and teens have a major falling out.
Sometime in Lilith’s past, she had been in an accident that partially disabled her. The disability doesn’t stop her from living a fascinating existence that includes discovering she has powers that sets her apart from those around her. And her disability doesn’t impinge on her social life that much. We meet some of her friends, one of them is named Ambrossi who has the power to heal people similar to how Jesus healed his followers, Lilith is hurt and Ambrossi comes and heals her deep cut leaving only a slight scar as proof of its previous existence. Another character in the book is a fairy named Fern, that is Lilith’s friend and often flits around her.
Lilith has a romantic attachment to a young man named Clio, who champions her to become all she can be. The story takes a big leap when Lilith steps up to save Tarj at the Arcane Ceremony when he is attacked by a powerful witch gone berserk. Lilith’s newfound powers and her ability to respond so quickly in the emergency surprises everyone. But it is not the attack that bothers Lilith the most, it is the words uttered by the attacking witch that causes her to start really questioning who she is and where she came from.
Lilith will discover that she is a very powerful individual who has powers that threaten others. She will also discover that she is not who she thought she was. Krantz serves up a bevy of sympathetic characters in wildly imaginative situations. She weaves many countless exciting details into her first installment of the series. She creates an unforgettable magical world and sets the stage for many high-stakes adventures to come.
