Book Review of :  Zyklon: A Francine Vega Investigative Thriller (Fava)

"Zyklon" by John Hazen is book two the Fava series. In this sequel the protagonist, Francine Vega, a young and up-coming reporter newly assigned as New York’s Action 6 News morning anchor stresses under her new promotion while becoming intimately involved with a strange series of murders and an odd Presidential Candidate, the Reverent Malcolm McKenzie.  The title of the book comes from the name given to a serial killer who uses Zyklon gas to kill his victims.  Zyklon B just happens to be the trade name of a cyanide-based pesticide invented in Germany in the early 1920s and used by Nazi Germany to murder around one million people in their gas chambers installed in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek, Sobibor and other extermination camps. The Zyklon Killer is on a rampage to kill descendants of former Nazis with this deadly poisonous gas.

Hazen gives us a glimpse of some disturbing beliefs of a Presidential hopeful, the Reverent Malcolm McKenzie who suggest that a way to solve the terrorist issues in the United States would be to destroy Mecca which is the holiest city of Islam and the equivalent of what the Vatican is to Catholics. His comments suggest the destruction of a place representing the beliefs of nearly two billion adherents.

Francine Vega who was very involved in thwarting a major attack that could have started a new world war is now totally involved with the Zyklon serial killing investigation. One tantalizing piece of evidence is some strange lettering written in blood on the trousers of one of the murdered men. It appears to be a part of a formula, it reads “Z=A, ”  and is believed to be a very critical part to the solution of the crimes. However, its meaning eludes the investigators. Five descendants of Nazis have been killed and Francine wants to be a part of the team that thwarts any further killings.

You don’t need to read the first book of the Fava series to understand the events in “Zyklon.” Hazen provides enough backstory of what previously happened that makes it very easy to follow the new story and have a good idea of the theme of the previous book.

This is a book where the sins of the fathers are visited upon the sons.  Francine’s engagement in the investigation of these killings gives the headlines that will keep her at the top of the Action News 6 news team.  The book contains numerous plot twists that you’d expect from Hazen’s writing.

For fans of political intrigue, and complex conspiracy theories, John Hazen is the perfect fit. He easily provides enough action, intrigue, and plot twists to keep you interested and turning pages.

The story is intellectually stimulating and the writing is cogent. You might find Hazen’s fictional book actually scary as a way too plausible thriller in today’s political-themed world. “Zyklon is his finest thriller.
