Book Review of :  The Massacre at Yellow Hill

The Massacre at Yellow Hill by C.S. Humble and published by Black Rose Writing is a story about a hellacious evil entity that has tremendous powers and surrounds itself with other hideous creatures that love to eviscerate its victims. The story takes place in West Texas in the 1870's. The first victim introduced in the story is thirty-five-year-old George Miller who is found by his co-workers desperately trying to push his mushrooming entrails back into their normal place of residence but to no avail. Yes, the story is very graphic and is dripping with blood and gore. In fact, If you can relate to author Humble's eloquently worded line, "Charlie Gathers clenched every hole south of his belt," as he wrote about what that worker felt as he tried to save the dying disemboweled George Miller, then the book is really for you.
One reason I liked "The Massacre at Yellow Hill," was that it didn't sugarcoat the bleak life people endured in the 1870's. It had a grittiness to it, and Humble's descriptions of the harsh life people lived then rang true, he graphically depicts the roughness of the people, the grueling work of the miners and their meager earnings. Humble describes the horrible scenario of what would probably happen to a widow and her family in a small mining town when the husband is killed. It quickly becomes obvious that West Texas life wasn't for the faint of heart.
I liked the colloquialisms that Humble sprinkled throughout the book. They add immensely to the originality of his work. The book is an amalgamation of western life in the 1870's and a horror story replete with all kinds of unspeakable monsters. It grabs you from the very beginning and keeps you reading to find out who survives the evil and can it be contained?
Humble has created a great cast of memorable characters; a horrible creature with six legs and a slobbering mouth full of barbed teeth, a young boy who is instrumental in fighting the demons, a bounty hunter who will give his all to defeat the evil, a greedy soulless man under the spell of the insidious evil, a book that emanates evil and even a tawdry town that is threatened by the impending horror.
Humble shows great talent for writing scary, creepy stories that might make it a bit hard to sleep when the lights flick off. His storytelling is polished and moves along nicely. If you are looking for a scary story to read on a dark stormy night, read "The Massacre at Yellow Hill." I loved it and I think you will too!
