Beth E. Heinzeroth White, an award-winning author,  holds a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Nursing degrees and has a long career in nursing, including adult critical care and pediatrics. Kit Wilson, RN, Treading Water follows her book about Kit Wilson, RN, as a first-year hospital nurse. This informative and entertaining novel is based on the author’s experience as a professional nurse and tells it like it was during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID pandemic affected everyone in different ways, from someone being a hospitalized victim to the family and friends of COVID-19 patients. Treading Water will allow readers to relive the year 2020 from the point of view of a registered nurse who struggles through the rumors, global shutdowns, worldwide mass hysteria, and misinformation of the deadly illness. Kit struggles with what she considers rumors and political misinformation until she is challenged with a layoff and healthcare changes despite an increase in hospitalizations due to the virus.

Kit Wilson is a competent and confident staff nurse in a major hospital when her professional and personal lives are dramatically altered. She faces not only the challenges of providing nursing care to critical and dying patients but also the struggles of hospitals overburdened with financial and personnel safety challenges. Kit’s personal life is now restricted to a “safe bubble,” which readers will relate to as Kit records her thoughts in her journal about working at home, her brother’s high school graduation, masking, six-foot distancing, and Zoom conferences.

Readers may be adverse to the memories that this bold book evokes. However, the roles of nursing and other medical personnel are exposed to enlighten and inform what went on behind the scenes and hospital walls. Readers will understand why this unheard-of, unusual situation was so difficult for nurses and medical personnel’s own health and mental well-being. Long hours with no sleep, social isolation, and interaction with dying patients contributed to their stress, as well as inadequate safety protocol and protective equipment.

Although serious in content, this book is not morbid. Kit and her family and friends are able to find joy and job satisfaction throughout their year of challenges. Personal growth and maturity are natural results of traumatic situations as the reader is left with a positive conclusion. Look forward to the author’s next Kit Wilson RN novel, Kit Wilson RN, Re-Creating Normal.
