Amanda Memories by Dr. Joel R. Gecht is an exciting book and difficult to put down. It has been a long time since this reviewer read a book as captivating as this psychological thriller. It is a mystery involving the prohibited behavior amongst mental health workers of over involvement with a patient. The author of Amanda Memories is a psychologist and CEO of a psychological consulting firm who has written a book inspired by professional encounters spanning three decades. One cannot help but wonder if he has experienced the angst of “falling in love” with a patient. Brian Roberts was a doctoral student of psychology at Florida State University when he met his first patient, Amanda, in the student-run clinic. She was a challenging patient with deep-seated issues involving extreme family dysfunction including incest. In the beginning there were many trust issues between Brian and Amanda, and he worked hard to win her trust. But as he obtained her trust he also gained her complete dependence upon him. In his desire to unlock her memories and bring her to a more stable degree of mental health, his devotion became more of an obsession with intrusive thoughts of Amanda. Upon graduation from FSU Dr. Brian Roberts transferred Amanda’s treatment to another psychologist but continued having contact with her through phone calls and letters. This is considered inappropriate behavior by the mental health profession and only encouraged Amanda’s reliance on him. He married a devoted woman, Nancy, who loved him and reluctantly put up with Brian’s continued contact with Amanda. Over the years Brian became a successful celebrity TV psychologist becoming preoccupied with his image and success. This distanced his wife who began seeking her reassurances and love elsewhere. The story culminates with the murder of Amanda implicating Brian as a prime suspect. Or was it suicide? One must read this fascinating book to determine the outcome as well as the unraveling revelations of Amanda’s memories.
